Capsule review: it's good dumb fun! However, I pissed off everyone in the theater because I couldn't stop laughing at all the Movie Computers, with Magic GUIs, millions of screens, and beaucoups des PDAs. There was a LOT of dumb computer folklorism going down in a movie which is juuuuuust this side of being Hackers 2. There is also a big dumb boomer-happy "kids don't know how to be heroes anymore" theme which runs throughout the flick, which is absolutely ridiculous considering that the major Boomer exports are currently International Terrorism, Monolithic Corporatism, and Self-Adoration. Plusses: despite myself, I got a semi for Maggie Q. Usually this kind of remote-but-sexy Asian she-dragon bullshit is a major turn-off, but she was really great. One of the few Dragon Lady bullshit queens who could really pull off both the icy competence and savage feral rage aspects of the build. The major export of Gen Y is huge dark glistening eyes, and they are in abundance in this movie. There are. So many. Explosions. HooooooYEAH, and the hero gets "bloody", but never appears to suffer anything more severe than a shortness of breath. Both funny... and relaxing! Minusses: Kevin Smith trying to act. Number one, old skool HAM radio-using dorks are not that cleanly. I'm sorry, man, but that was obviously a fresh shirt and you probably just took a shower, too. You're also at least couple of stones light for that role. Number two: his accent, such as it was, completely threw me, and more than any number of injuries from which Bruce Willis failed to suffer, it made me puzzle my way out of suspension of disbelief. Be prepared for the wide and untiring usage of "hacker" and "cyber-" - incorrectly every time, even in the broad scope granted to those words. BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL: this movie is filmed almost entirely in Korean Music Video bluefilter. When did this become a hot look? It's dumb. It makes me long for the rich bright hues of the mid 90's. Anyway, you probably will not regret throwing down the moooooolah for this film if you see it in the theater. It's plenny fun. |
