My grandfather ran a barber shop and would send back the covers of unsold comics to Marvel. He'd give my brother and I the comics instead of throwing them out. Virtually none of the stripped comics have survived to this day, although I recall getting a Tomb of Dracula comic in the mix, which was pretty scary back then for a dumb kid. The writer played up the fact that Dracula has to be invited inside in that issue, so most of it is him trying to psychologically trick some poor guy in the country into letting him into the guy's house. In 2007 I find myself living in a suburb where door-to-door salesmen try the same thing every couple of days, only when compared to Dracula, they are not nearly as polite.
Avengers #204 is the oldest comic that I can remember reading that I still have. The Yellow Claw was Japanese and, well, there is no easy way to put this, the colorist picked canary yellow #5 with which to color him. I guess there's a reason nobody's seen this character in 20 years. The Avengers are trying to stop the Yellow Claw and his sidekick Sambo from getting jobs as the Cleveland Indians mascot. The Avengers lineup was:
Captain America (I had no idea that they were substituting "blast" as "damn" because in the 70s, people didn't swear in comics. I thought grown-ups just said, "Blast!" a lot.)
Iron Man (The narrator spews some horseshit about how his powers were originally magnet-based, and he uses this power to knock two missiles into each other. As opposed to blowing them up with ray guns coming out of every orifice in that suit.)
The Beast (Criminally underused in the Avengers, except when some loser turned him into a dead ringer for the Disney "Beauty and the Beast" guy a couple years ago)
Wonder Man (He either wasn't allowed to speak or was in one of his many "dead periods")
The Vision, the Scarlett Witch (I would have picked the Vision too, honey)
The Wasp, Jocasta (The robot girl with indestructible skin and face-lasers was in training in order to get her skills up so she could become a full-fledged and powerful member like, say, the Wasp. This also gave the Avengers two robots on the team at once, which was two more robots than black people.)
It was a fantastic self-contained comic and I collected the Avengers for about 15 years thereafter.
