The man had trekked five miles down the steep canyon and about eight miles in all, but ended up about a mile as the crow flies from the car.

But none of the idiots at cnet including 4000+ loser blog posters will say that a gps (or even a fucking compass) would have helped him. He had a map for christ sakes, what's the excuse for being a so called tech authority and ending up flat on his back in a river.
