Really pretty cool so far, especially with no random encounters and all the battles taking place right in the world. I've even noticed the occasional friendly NPC in battle areas and they'll cast protect on me or some stray rabbits that cast tiny cure spells on me. And then sometimes you'll be in an area with some normal enemies that take some more damage, and like right next to them might be a werewolf which kills you in one fawkin hit, and you're just supposed to avoid those guys. Fortunately the "flee" command is so easy, it's just "hold R2 until your dudes holster their weapons, and you just run in the other direction." It really is like FF11 Offline with the fetch quests and "find this monster in this area and kill him and come back to me for a reward" quests, and even the gear itself gives you stat boosts. The first piece of leather armor I found (and then got a license for with their crazy licensing system replacing the sphere grid) gave me a higher max HP.
The beginning starts out with some giant FMV scenes of guys who are like actually not children for a change and actually sound older than 12 with the voice acting, which is a nice departure from all the ridiculous peter pan syndrome Chester P. Childtouch heroes of jap RPGs past. The characters are still like stereotypical animoo guys with the little noses that look almost plastic surgery made and short spikey hair that is A BEAUTIFUL SILVER ~___________~. Then they throw you to Vaan who's like a teenage Aladdin guy, but still he doesn't seem like a 12 year old implanted into a 14 year old's body. Then you run around having adventures in a sort of enemy occupied territorial city in the middle of two warring countries or some such.
The game is apparently still teaching me the ropes. I haven't even been shown the gambit system yet, I've only been told about it, and I've had one introductory party member so far. They basically play themselves, so as long as I set my main party leader dude Vaan (VAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN) to attack, my party friend will follow up. And you can still give them commands yourself if you want. Controlling everything in the game is easy, even if you're picking a white magic spell with your main dude and you want to switch to another party member's spells, you just hit right and it'll switch characters and stay in the same command catagory without having to go back back back back then spells white magic cure. It's nice to streamline.
I'm thinking of making the hot Yuffie/Rikku sidekick friend girl into either a gunslinger or rifleman whatever equivalent, or the fuckin main warrior class chick. Because they game lets you. And then I might just make HER the party leader and pretend she's the main character of the game, and then program Vaan to just auto attack with whatever the fuck I decide he's going to do for the rest of the game, and have fuckin Rikku girl comp stomp every muthafuck that gets in her way. |
