Listen, for about a year there in 1992 there was a rare window open (because of Nevermind) where actual awesome rock music was getting signed to major labels and pimped on the radio.
I would say that the greatest triumvarate of these records was:
Helmet - Meantime
Jawbox - For Your Own Special Sweetheart
Shudder To Think - Pony Express Record
All three are classics, in my opinion. And not only are they classics musically, they have a weird position in rock history as being very fucking weird, arty records that nonetheless got top 40 airplay. It's unfathomable now, but it did happen, and I'm very glad for it because otherwise I never would have gotten into weird guitar music. Ironically, I heard about Fugazi because of Shudder To Think, and not the other way around. |
