Funny, I was going to get into a similar argument on Oink but decided it wasn't worth my time. Benefit from my playbook!
First, like Fussbett says, these people secretly yearn for the days of trafficking contraband through IRC and BBS, when there was a strict hierarchy and some people were OBVIOUSLY better than others. Hierarchy is how the OCD get ahead. So you're fighting that, whether they'll cop to it or not.
Second, it's impossible for everyone to obtain a 1.0 ratio on any given torrent. If there's one snatch, that guy will have a ratio of ... zero! With two, their average ratio can't be better than 0.5. And so on, always obeying the formula (1-1/N) where N is the number of snatchers. This problem is pronounced on a niche site like oink where N is often below 10.
Third, things work perfectly well in spite of the 'problem'. Oink has blessed me with 30GB in the past two weeks (my ratio? 1.02), and I've abondoned fewer than 5 torrents out of 300 due to seedlessess. My success rate on suprnova is about the same, in spite of much larger torrents and no ratios whatsoever. So ratios are irrelevant. Empirically.
Fourth, you can't win the argument if you don't steal their sanctimounious frame. Point out that for every person with a ratio of 12, there are 11 people with a ratio below 1. Draw comparisons to SUV-driving Americans who make themselves look good at the expense of everyone. You could suggest that the quickest way to improve the median ratio would be to ban the people with ratios over 3.
Fifth, you are right, but in thousands of years that has yet to affect the outcome of an argument. Good luck!
