| In "Delerious", Eddie Murphy makes some fun of the audience members who will go to work the next day and try to repeat his jokes, and fail: "...'he had a GI Joe stuck up his ass!' ... 'that's some funny shit'". Then he tells a short bear-wiping-his-ass joke that they won't fuck up.
I think you could classify all stand-up comics on a scale of imitability. At the high end are Steven Wright and Jerry Seinfeld: with their clever observations and lifeless delivery, you could give anyone off the street that material and see that person get the same response Jerry and Steven get. It's worth noting these are two of the most oft-repeated comedians around, though far from the funniest. Most -- David Cross, Chris Rock, George Carlin -- are somewhere in the middle, with solid material that needs some showmanship to come alive. Gervais is in a class by himself. In Animals, the star / writer / whatever of "The Office" talks about little more than what he's seen on the internet and some books he's borrowed from the library. You get the impression he wrote the set that morning, or maybe on the way to the venue. And still, it's incredibly funny. Every facial twitch, every pause and word cut short, is just perfect.
