Which is because of the fact the game was 90% uninteractive matte backgrounds, which in contrast were populated by jarringly low resolution characters comprised of no more than 3 polygons a piece. It's art and an oh so clevAr imitation of that crazy mexican dead man's Christmas. Not you, you know, piss poor graphics.
Don't forget that the entirety of the game leads one down the Gabriel Knight variety of ridiculously overcomplicated adventure game tropes.

Actually, this is maybe one of the easiest puzzles in the entire game. It's pretty intuitive getting the tumblers to line up. But since people might actually solve it on their own, they threw in having to use your scythe to wedge it inbetween the tumblers after you had lined them up, even though by any logical sense the door should have been open already and wedging something inbetween the open tumblers and the door edge would actually making it harder to open.
I'd say the most ridiculous puzzle comes when you have to get a gun from some florist guy who's under heavy guard.
- Find a carrier pigeon. Give it a death threat note you received from the florist's boss. Then show it a picture of some dead guy (NOT the florist) and this will somehow get the pigeon to deliver the note to the florist. The florist will somehow assume that his boss sent him the death threat and he will go into hiding in his shop in the sewers.
- If you try going down the sewer tunnel towards the shop, your character will turn around saying if he won't be able to find him in that maze unless he has "something useful". At this point for items all you have is a scythe, skeleton hand, and bottle of liquid nitrogen. Does anyone see the maze navigating solution there? Time's up! The answer is taking the hand to a snow maker, placing the hand inside of the grinder, then ripping out the grinder and taking it with you. Use the grinder with hand on the tunnel and you will leave a trail of "bone crumbs". Jesus christ.
- Once in the florist shop, he will be all paranoid and will threaten you with a gun until you leave. You have a scythe and liquid nitrogen left in your inventory. The solution is to use you scythe on a tiny ball of tape above the door that blends in with the background. No pixel hunting can identify this tape as an important object due to the game's context looking system where your character turns his head to look at important objects. For the tape it looks like he's looking at the door, just like all doors in the game where using them will have you travel through them. Anyways, use the scythe on the tape which will reveal a bell. At this point the florist will get pissed and throw you out. Immediately reenter the shop. The door will set off the bell and the florist will think you're a customer and calm down, giving you the gun.
