On the US side, we have the entire textiles industry, the entire agricultural industry, and the entire aerospace industry. I don't see much difference between protection of inefficient industries from competition on either side of the Atlantic.

I guess I see a difference in the matter of what proportion of the economy they represent, vs. protected/government run industries in Europe. Not that I like either sort all that much.

I have no real opinion on what's causing slow European adoption of IT; it could be culture, it could be government barriers to change, or it could just be random chance. It's not like any other first world country has really adopted IT, either. Need more evidence.

It probably depends on whether you are trying to be objective about things, or looking at everything as a potential part of your initial preconceived notion (like me).

Is there a real theory behind "taxation causes lower growth?" Growth is productivity driven; productivity is driven by invention + investment; it's highly unlikely taxes significantly change the rate of invention, so it's all got to be in investment. But if anything, I seem to remember Europe having higher rates of investment than we do. I agree that taxation causes deadweight loss, but I don't see why that'd show up in growth differences.

I think taxation might have a cultural impact on invention, if you'll allow me a moment of unsubstantiated theorizing. Well, another moment. Taxes have become an active instrument of egalitarianism and income redistribution rather than simply funding government expenditures, and the more they do so in that direction the less overall incentive there is to do anything but survive. Including invent.

As to the rate of investment, I think it would depend on which part of Europe we are looking at. I know for a fact as of the mid 90's the fact that government bonds in Sweden paid better than most private investments in the country caused a pretty significant rate of decline. I would suspect the case is not much different in France or Germany, unless they retain some sort of personal resistance to factoring in risk vs profit.
