Indeed, you are correct. As I read my little manual (I never throw them out, I still have the manual for Quake 1), it appears that you do indeed break into the place in the future, without travelling back in time. Still, it's absolutely fucking stupid.

Sad, too, since the game would have been upgraded from Shitpile to Not Bad If You Don't Think About It Too Much with a better interface. Interface problems always seem to plague first person games that aren't FPS's. This one was fucking awful, though.
