Think I'll have to post my ethics system thanks to this conversation - it'll be up in rants in the next day or two. I'm almost a completely amoral person - I believe that there are direct ethical imperatives against murder, rape, capitalism, and unwarranted physical assault that can be logically reasoned out from Decartes' 'cogito, ergo sum.' To be honest I'm pretty much completely amoral as regards absolutely everything else (if you want to smoke crack or fuck sheep, I have no problem with it until better methods of determining sentience than the mirror test are devised). Even worse, provided the implementation is absolute (a completely open society in which all locations have multiple cameras with microphones), I'd have no problem with rolling up the concept of privacy and tossing it out the window. However I have tremendous misgivings about any 'partial' privacy implementation.
Also reread my first statement in a less antagonistic voice - I wasn't putting any words in your mouth, but rather leaving you free to pursue any and all options along that line if you so chose. Or at least, I was trying to - the Mirror test is fuzzy at best (I actually got a chance to speak with the professor who invented it about 4 years back), so it's hard for me to hold an opinion about bestiality and zooarests with any vindiction. The best I can offer is that I believe in a 'tiered' system which basically states that animals should not be killed wantonly, while orangutans, chimps and humans of two years of age and under should not be killed or even suffer if it can reasonably be helped, and older humans should not die if anything at all can be done to preserve their sentience (exception: desire for self-termination).
There's reasons for all of the above, but it's too complicated to get into tonight. More later.
