Video:
The Radeon 9500pro and NVidia geforceFX 5400 are DirectX 9.0 parts with pixel shaders and all that good shit, good options for around $100-175. (the FX 52/54/5600 cards all have the dustbuster moter included to drive you to heroine or homocide). If you want to blow the coin (I did) the 9700pro rocks and is silent. The 9800pro and FX 5900 (not yet available; supposed to be the shit and minus the bone saw) will cost you about $400 and you will be well ahead of any software that takes real advantage of it.

Sound cards not pre built on motherboards:
that Audigy gamer/MP3 parts are cheap and and are reference audio for PCs, there are better but why fuck around with bullshit driver hassles unless you are queer japanese audiophile (in that case look into M-Audio) If you are a musician or want the optical digital out, get the Platinum/ex. The break-out box makes more sense is is easier to hook into your speakers or A/V reciever then the dork-box front panel.

Optical Drives:
Sony, the all in one deal. Maximum compatibility and options. For less money and still a solid choice, get the same Pioneer "superdrive" apple uses (I have one in my tower they come with a wealth of Windows software). if you have no use for DVD burning (ha!), get a $70 16X DVD-ROM and a $150 CD burner (TDK or Yamaha work well for me, plextor if you want to pretend it's 1999 and we all use SCSI.)

It's all good.
