P4 2.66 GHz processor, 512MB DDR SDRAM, 120 GB HD, 48X Max CD/DVD/RW, SB Audigy (I'll upgrade to 2 later in the year), 128MB GeForce4. 20" flat screen monitor in a month or so (just using my old 17" in the meanwhile). How is?
Shouldn't you be able to get a 3 ghz processor with $1200?
With all that other stuff and Best Buy's 3 year warranty and pro-rated upgrade/new system purchase coverage, no. My system with all that came in ju-u-ust under 1300.
I comparison shopped, or whatever it's called. Fry's doesn't build PCs (said the snotty clerk, a dude who looked like a funeral home director - I would know!), and the (same) clerk balked when I asked for a printout of what seemed to be the best system for my budget. "We don't normally do that," he sniffed, as if management was enforcing a rule to prevent comparison shopping. Fuck buying a PC from a fucking joint like that (although I wandered through the Home Entertaiment mega-section there, and almost came. Wide-screen TVs for 1K and under? Surround sound for 3 hundy? All-in-one stereo/VCR/DVD for 2? SPLERGH), hell no. Also, Fry's systems appeared to be deals, until you noticed the video card or the sound card or the HD space or RAM was shit. Yeah Creex, here's your 1200 dollar 3 gigger, it just has a 20G HD and no CD writer, and a 64 bit sound card by someone I never heard of. FUCK YOU MANG I CHOOT YOUR PEES OF CHIT.
Gateway and Dell both priced my system at 1500+. Maybe if I wanted a monitor (a cheesy one) and some other bells and whistles, ok. But they only knock a pittance off if you custom build without a monitor (or nuke you if you upgrade to a 20" flat screen), and they overcharge for up to date sound and video cards. And the jump from 2.6 to 3.0 was to the tune of a few hundred. Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I don't think I got ripped off. Thanks to the warranty thing from Best Buy, I can grab a better sound and video card in a couple of months and they'll pro-rate them.

I wouldn't have minded giving you instructions on building your own by hand - and including photos. I mean, every couple months here I rebuild three of my six systems from scratch out of some weird compulsion, so it's not like a problem. My skills are always reasonably sharp.
Buying Best Buy is generally better than buying CompUSA - they were kicking the fuck out of us when they opened in my hometown back when I worked at CompUSA, and with their prices at the time we totally deserved it. NEVER EVER EVER EVER BUY GATEWAY OR HP OR COMPAQ I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH THEY ARE LIKE THE THREE PRIME EVILS IN DIABLO EXCEPT THEY ARE COMPUTER MANUFACTURERS. If you must buy from a manuf, buy Dell, or Sony if you feel like getting ripped off. Always build it yourself if that's at all an option, and it's an option for everyone who isn't quadriplegic.
