Yeah, Namco makes this and it's 3rd or 4th in their tales series. I can't really compare it to Star Ocean 2 as I always said I'd wait for the SNES rom to get translated/playable first. (If it is, I still don't have opportunity to try it now). I don't think it's the same people as Xenosaga though...isn't that Square? Squeenix?

Anyway, yeah, characters are a tad shallow if not single minded. Hard NOT to come up with a cliche nowdays (stupid swordsman with a heart of gold, etc.) but not many RPGs give me a chance to play as a fat black housecleaner in a kerchief. Well, ONE, but it was Chrono Cross and they really fucked the dog on that one anyway. But like I said, combat is fun.

What do the other players do outside of combat? Sing close-knit harmonies and circle jerk I suppose. Discuss STRATEGY!?!

Cooking isn't that deep, you can make an after battle snack and add extra ingredients to get some HP back but you're not making recipies up as they're given to you by the Master Gourmet if you can find him. The only real combining/testing I'm doing now is coming up with my own unison attack combos (lightning + pow hammer = Mjolinor!) or EX Gem effects. I could look at the guides the 10-year olds on gamefaqs wrote by now but I'm so hardcore I don't look at jack-SHIT my first playthrough.

The dialogue, a mix of text and text/spoken, is not bad. I'm seeing the word "pissed" enough times.

Only sucky part so far is the lack of anime movies after you watch the first one in the attract mode. Way to shoot your load right away, boys. And I got stuck talking to a shopkeeper behind the counter as she turned to face me and her fat shoulders blocked the way and she's a fat fat FAT CUNT 30 MINUTES SACRIFICED FOR A RESET.

Score so far: I dunno, it's nice and I plan to keep playing it. 8 out of 10, where 8 means it's fun and I plan to finish it and there's nothing good enough to warrant a score of 10 EVER ANYWAY.
