The sims is one of the most original games to come out in a long time. It also sucks, but at least it's headed in the right direction.

EQ, on the other hand, is garbage. I didn't play it precisely because it was too static - you can hardly customize your char with the class system that's in place. Blech. MUDs have had an order of magnitude more malleability for over a decade since they don't have to deal with graphical constraints.

Garbage and no useful example of innovation, as it's just a DikuMUD with graphics.

As for the appetite for sandbox vs. linear games.... while The Sims is huge, so are any number of hyper-linear OMGFRUSTRATEDDIRECTOR Japanese games, and there have been a lot of nonlinear games that blew very, very badly. Plus, storytelling linearity has the added bonus of being something (relatively) new every time. Even if the graphics aren't that much better, getting the chance to see what the hell Solid Snake is up to this time can certainly appeal to people. And, as mentioned earlier, it doesn't matter whether or not the new system provides a new gameplay experience, because those who want the same gameplay experience with different widgets will have to upgrade.

Oh, and one other thing (just as a response to one sub-subthread. Anybody who thinks that there were only a handful of good games on the SNES (or Genesis, for that matter) either never had the system, or never looked past the magazine ads. The "Glory days of the PSX" featured rather a lot of platformers and boring RPGs too, except with added shitty cameras looking on blurry, warped textures. Oh, and largely empty boards too, thanks to the weak power of the PSX.
