Best Lecture: Tie between Jason Rubin of Naughty Dog whose "Next Generation Graphics: Who Cares?" speech both terrified and inspired all of us, the
Carmack has made comments to this effect before:
John's hunch is that eventually 3D hardware will be based on some kind of multiresolution representation, where the world is kept in a data structure that fundamentally supports rendering it in near-constant time from any viewpoint.
Voxels are one example of such a structure. John mentioned that he actually wrote a voxel renderer and converted an entire Quake 2 level to use it. It wound up being about 3 gigabytes of data! But he said that that's not actually that far off from today's [1998 --ed.] hardware capacity
Well, that's not exactly what Rubin was talking about, although Carmack's stuff about changing the way art is constructed could be one possible outcome of the shift in industry priority Rubin predicts. His point was the "bang for buck" increase we see with each iterative step up in hardware capability is becoming smaller and smaller, even as those iterations get larger and larger. For example, most people's reactions when they made the switch from NES to SNES or SNES to (3D0 to) PSX were along the lines of "OMFG! ROOFLE!!!" But these were relatively small steps technologically. When we made the leap from PSX to PS2, which was on the order of about 100-250 times the graphics processing power (based solely on the total number of triangles being drawn to screen on any given frame), the reaction from gamers was a bit more sedate. You can now play GT3A and if you squint your eyes and stand back a few feet from the TV, it looks like you're watching a tape of an actual car race. Same with Madden and the latest tennis games. What more can you do with the PS3 or XBox 2? You can probably bump up the poly counts on the cars, make the highlights on the players' helmets in Madden actually be reflections of real-world lights instead of fakes, and make Anna Kournikova's hair flow ever so realistically in the breeze as she blows another passing shot, but will those be better driving, football, or tennis games? Has the thread run out on those franchises? And also, you're going to spend a hell of a lot more money actually making the art for those, are you going to make it back when your target audience will already have the game, with just slightly less-perfect graphics?
So, where is the wow factor going to come from in TEH FUTURE OF VIDEO GAMES? Innovation was Rubin's answer, but what is that, and how do you do it, and how do you get a publisher to pay you to try and do it?
Anyway, these are questions for better minds than mine, which means better minds than anyone else on this board as well...

the "martini" I was served in the lobby of the Fairmont on the last night of the conference (suffice to say it was warm, weak, and served in a plastic Gamespy cup).
Most hotels, these days, have little cookie-sheet sized window openings. FSJ is the only hotel I've visited in the last 10 years with windows you could open and throw yourself out of.
I broke one of those same windows my first night up there. I was given a room on the top floor of the hotel, much to my delight. The room, however, was so permeated with the smell of cigarette smoke (much to my dismay) that I began wonder if I was still in California, before realizing this was probably where the cattle from the Midwest stayed when they came to rustle up VC money for their latest harebrained idea. Trying to crack open one of those giant windows you're so fond of took it right off its rails and left it in a sort of skewed, drunken look (appropriate enough, given my state of inebriation at the time).

Most Gratifying Moment of GDC: A table full of some of the best programmers in the business laughing their heads off when I mentioned I'd read a post on a message board suggesting John Carmack was a "competent implementor." This got separated from its pic, somehow.
