I'm sorry, but the jump from NES to SNES was not OMG HOLY SHIT. My entire gaming experience up until that point had been Intellivision, C64, and NES. Plus I was about 10 at the time so you could hardly call me jaded. My first impression of SNES graphics was "eh, we've got more colors and some nifty pixelicious zoom effects, but that's about it". The only holy shit fucking sweet advance in graphics moment I can remember was playing FF7 for the first time.

Here's my answer if I spoke with my heart: THE DEATH OF LINEARITY. Missions, choose-your-own-adventure plot unraveling, jumping through the designers' hoops. All gone. Players love sandbox games, and with games like EverQuest, The Sims, and GTA3 we've only seen the very beginning of what can be done in that respect.
