I understand the reasons for a war in Iraq for during the whole current 'crisis'. The logic to go to war is well publicized, the purposes are clearly stated SINCE LAST YEAR. The long term prospect of a free and democratic Iraq outweighs any short term suffering of Iraqis, so any self-respecting humanitarian must favour a war to remove Saddam Hussein. And given the track record of Security Council in helping oppressed people, a diplomatic solution to help Iraqis is clearly unlikely. The only way to help Iraqis is to remove Saddam Hussein and his cronies by force. Threat of Iraq providing WMD to terrorists can only strengthen the argument to remove Saddam Hussein.
Yada yada yada, old news. This is what I know, a good argument for war, and I tell this to everyone who would listen.
The only good argument against war that I've heard of is that, AT THIS PARTICULAR MOMENT people are not convinced of the good intentions, thus there may be a backlash against US & UK, and the whole Middle East may blow up. Scare mongering? Yes, but the prospect is real.
Yet I have a feeling that most people will never be convinced. It is bugging me for a while. I'm not talking about French here. I'm talking about Joe/Jane Blogg in the street protesting against the war, and there are lots of them. Do they NOT want a free and democratic Iraq in the near future? Do they want a perpetually underdeveloped Iraq? No, they are just suspicious that the war is motivated by oil and oil only. No, 'suspicious' is not the right adjective. 'Fully convinced without a doubt' are the right words.
Even IF the war is motivated by oil, then the argument to liberate Iraq clearly legitimates the whole war. Yet their unconfirmed suspicions are only confirmed by every denial from the US and UK government. There are plenty of good reasons to go to war, they just don't listen. WHY WHY WHY?
Sometimes it really pisses me off to see logic and reason being gang raped once every twelve seconds. |
