Werd, dawg. That (or variations of that) has been pissing me off for ages, ever since Phantasy Star II where dies and they say "oops, sorry, we can't revive " despite the fact that I had revived DOZENS OF FUCKING TIMES and nothing had truly changed. That's one of the reasons I liked FFX, actually... the summoning of Aeons worked pretty much the same in cutscenes that it did in combat.


Don't forget that character that's supremely powerful early on when you first get them for awhile then is totally average early on. Usually they're a boss you fight that ends up joining you later or they're part of your party at the begining as a sort of training wheels set to help you breeze through the first area (after which they either leave your party, get killed off by the uber villain so you can avenge them later, or become cursed and be reduced to an average character). Either way, when they join you again later in the game they'll have not leveled up at all since then and will be the same strength or weaker than the rest of your party: Magus from CT, Beatrice from FF9, Auron from FF10, Sampson from Beyond the Beyond (not quite as horrible as everyone might believe).

Wasn't all this on the list of great RPG cliches that the GIA wrote awhile back? That was the best thing to ever come out of that site (aside from the facisnation I had with them managing to have the exact opposite opinion of mine for every game ever released, Parasite Eve 2 excluded). I think I actually have the thing printed out somewhere. Would it be feasible or appropriate to get permission and post it up here? There was some good stuff in that.
