Macs are fantastic unless you play games or want to use sound software other than protools.

Cool Edit is indeed the greatest sound editing app of all time, and nothing can ever replace it. On the mac: maybe I just haven't found tools I like yet (I did spend a lot of time finding tools I liked on the pc for editing, tracking, etc), or maybe the tools don't exist (this is my guess). I've been thinking about writing some sound apps in desperation, but this requires time I won't have for a long while. A few of my electronic music friends went mac, but from my understanding all they do is run their hardware in and edit in protools (although one of them has a hideously expensive Korg and it came with its own software...) instead of creating new music on the machine, which is what I prefer. When I started computer-composing music in highschool, I used Macs with Midi Keyboards I really liked it. However, I can't remember what software I used and it probably doesn't exist anymore.

Do you have any idea what your profs/boss are using? Since you use real instruments in the real world, you probably would have less trouble moving over than I have. Still, you would have to unlearn what you know which is much more painful than the learning a new system. Oh, and you can't use your dream pre-amp.

In my response to Motherhead, I mentioned QWERTY economics. Having actually purchased (and immediately returned) Pro Tools for the PC, I can safely say that Pro Tools for the home user is terrible. The Digi 001 is a crappy, noisy preamp, the interface for Pro Tools sucks compared to Nuendo, and the support consists of "You shouldn't be running other software on your Pro Tools workstation." So, screw Digi, that's not a good enough reason to switch. My bosses run Digital Performer, which started out as the shady Mac version of Cubase and somehow over the years became a pretty sweet sequencer. (It supports Directx, VST *and* RTAS plugins!) To hear my comp prof tell it, everybody on the East Coast (NYC) is running Gigastudio through Digital Performer, and everybody in LA is running Logic. Logic is another example of a program that I bought for PC only to find out that the PC version was a very expensive Mac "Switch" ad. The joke was that Logic has a utility that reminds you to run scandisk every time you boot it up - because it crashes the machine the second you hit play.

There is a case to be made for sticking with PC, and that case is that Steinberg is throwing some serious punches lately. I hated the original Cubase (recording automation in real-time? Come on.), but SX seems pretty awesome (and Nuendo is *dope*, for film shit anyways). Unfortunately, I'm not getting everything out of it (no ReWire support, for instance), because it's meant for XP and and I'm on 98.

What are you using?

(You are right that there is no CEPro equivalent for Mac. My boss suggested I get Dave and keep my current PC for audio editing, and sequence off my new Mac G4 that he is insisting I buy. That would work great, if I had three grand and my apartment was twice as big.)
