There are a lot of people out there who do not want to hear that GTA3 or GTA:VC might just possibly be shitty. I am waiting for the PC release of VC, but many of the missions in GTA3 were fucking miserable. The thing is worth the price due to the sandbox play (and car surfing), but the timed missions blew, the inability of all Pay N' Sprays to be on the radar at all times is ridiculous, the water-as-acid thing was laughable, the bit where most of the cars you encounter are the same as the one you are driving due to console memory constraints is shit, and the fact that save anywhere (or even a Mafia-style autosave) is absent is totally without defense.
I am, however, a sucker for games that have a Mall in them (I own State of Emergency in spite of its universally-bad reviews just because of this) so when it gets ported and when none of the things listed above are even remotely fixed, I will still pick it up like a bitch because I want to go on a rampage with escalators around.
the dark and gritty...Ice Cream Jonsey!
You've mentioned all the basic problems that I have with the game. The most outstandingly stupid one is the water that kills you. Also, let me tell you that the VC missions are ubergay compared to the GTA3 ones. Lot of races (especially the boat races, groan) and timed missions that suck. I quit playing after I bought the porn film studio. I couldn't for the life of me manage to fly the god damned biplane correctly.
As a fan of GTA:VC, I can agree that the magic wears off MUCH more quickly than it did for the original. And I'm struggling to find time to play it anymore, given all the other games that I've gotten into. Having said that, I can't bring myself to say it's really any worse than GTA3.
- I liked the car races, personally (okay, so the speedboat ones were much more meh-ish). The only one that got frustrating (due to me losing time and time again) was the mission you have to do if you want to earn money from the Malibu nightclub. Otherwise, I had no problems, because the AI is realistic/forgiving enough to get involved in some massive accidents as long as you just avoid fucking up badly yourself.
- I had no problems figuring out the biplane - it is SO much goddamn easier to fly than the fucking Dodo from the original. I can't imagine what problems you had in flying it. And as an added bonus (hurrah for cheap exploits!!!), I won the final porn studio mission by NOT using the motorcycle, other than driving it far enough to trigger the cutscene with the elevator - use a helicopter instead.
- I liked the missions in a general sense. But the one thing that ruled about GTA3 (at times) and is just about completely missing in VC is the ability to win some missions with more than one method. I remember "Farewell, Chunky Lee Chong" from GTA3 - you could try to gun him down, or you could install a bomb in his escape car, or if you're lucky and get in a car chase and you accidentally kill a few civvies and the cops are after you, his shitty slow car is likely to get involved in a horrific crash and catch on fire, prompting him to run out, whereupon you can think of a number of amusing ways to kill him. In VC it's much more a case of "do it this way or you're screwed". At least the game is open-ended in a more general "sandbox" sense... they didn't subtract from that at all. Arguably it's even better since some of the side missions can reap huge rewards (once you own businesses that generate revenue for you daily).
- The soundtrack is SO FUCKING GREAT. Love Fist r00lz!
- Here's an incredibly helpful hint for dealing with the water problem: DON'T TRY TO SWIM. Okay, so I agree that the acid-water is ten thousand kinds of retarted, but I just don't care anymore. I think GTA:VC at least deserves credit for being more forgiving when you try to get off of a boat and climb onto a dock - it may look fucking stupid when you warp from one place to the next, but at least you don't instantly fucking die because the programmers got lazy.
- The Hunter helicopter is just marvelously destructive and elevates the game above GTA3 all by its goddamn self. It's so much easier to survive a six-star-wanted-level with the police - I could only stay alive in GTA3 for a while if I hid at the top of the parking garage on Staunton Island.
The only frustrating thing I'm having a hard time adapting to is using PS2 controls to play this, after playing GTA3 on Windows. Assuming the port of VC holds true to GTA3 tradition, it should be a little better in every way and ESPECIALLY better when it comes to controls. (I'm also thinking of giving up on the PS2 version of Hitman 2 and getting the Windows version instead, for the same reason.) |
