Tom Chick's criticisms regarding the game were flat-out misplaced. Nearly every thing he complained about not being able to do (figure out formations, get his build orders put through the pipe, etc.) I was able to do within two minutes of encountering the necessary portion of the game (fifty and five minutes in, respectively for those two). The other game thinks his keyboard should be taken away.
However, what Zebco said about MOO3 is true. It looks like ass, many decisions operate at a high level of abstraction while others are fine-grain, and there is little solid visible linking between the two. The UI is inconsistent and bewildering.
Not permitting 1024x768 graphics in a day dominated by nVidia cards - all of which display lower resolutions interlaced - should be a capital crime outright. Seriously. If you're a developer, and you make a game that cannot be run higher than 800x600, stop whatever you are doing right now and throw yourself out a high window. You're doing the world and yourself a favor here, trust me.
"But, but - making the interface work at different resolutions is haaaaard Barbie," I hear you whine like a surly preschooler not getting a cookie.
Shut the fuck up, you sniveling little bitch. You've got an art department, right? You pay them, right? You've got a fucking fancy-ass, long-ass, well-animated intro movie, right? FUCKING GET ON THE STICK AND TELL ME YOU LOVE IT, ASSHOLE.
Actually, from the looks of the game Quicksilver does NOT have an art department, although they apparently have a pretty good work-for-blowjobs relationship with ILM. Nevermind that the interface could very easily have been done in vector graphics. Yes, it's that bad.
The other game I was playing was a fuckload more fun than this. No, it wasn't a game I've played before. No, I won't ever tell you what it is but I will refer to it a lot from now on. The other game was prettier. The other game was immediate thrills and non-linear. The other game kicked this game's ass. However, the other game provided no longterm satisfaction.
Jury's out on how much that applies to MOO3, but I wanted to tell you my first impressions.

I took a long and painful, but ultimately satisfying shit before playing MOO3 - and I'm wondering if that was an omen of sorts. |
