It's kind of funny to look at the archives of achewood.com and realize how many strips he did in the early 2000s, and how few he did for some later years. Like he did more strips in August 2005 than he did in all of 2012.
I agree that he hit some kind of low in 2010 with the prolonged Nice Pete van story arc. In my opinion all the Nice Pete strips were just creepy and unfunny. I guess he was trying to riff on slasher films, but it just didn't land with me.

But Ondtad seems himself as a peer of, like, PG Wodehouse and turns his nose up at Jim Davis, which is galling as Garfield is objectively a more groundbreaking, funny strip, and consistent over the years.
Ha, the hottest of hot takes. I can't really comment because I never read PG Wodehouse. He wrote about butlers and 1920s guys in top hats, right?
Garfield strikes me as Standard Extruded Entertainment Product, but highly consistent over the years. You're not going to hate any Garfield strip.
Also, maybe I'm imagining this, but I feel like Garfield is kind of dark? Like Jon's life is REALLY shit, much more so than Snoopy, Calvin and Hobbes, or Dilbert. And maybe sometimes the joke is how unfunny the strip actually is? Like a "why did the chicken cross the road" kind of deal.
Or maybe I'm imagining all this. Fuckin Garfield, man. |
