Also, KBR totally runs this place. To the point of absurdity. And I do not like it. Up north we did everything ourselves and got by just fine. Down here KBR does everything, and to get anything done you have to go through them. They aren't needed and to me they seem like they are more trouble than they are worth.
Wait a minute, the Army has to ask permission from Halliburton to do stuff? Can't you just, like, shoot them? For me? I guess I just hadn't admitted to myself the full extent of how fucked up that whole thing is.
It's pretty ridiculous. Pretty much everything in this camp is "owned" by KBR, so we can't do shit to it. For example, when we got here, we of course wanted to sandbag the walls of the trailers (which are very nicely airconditioned). A pretty obvious thing to do, especially coming from our old FOB where you could look at the stars through all the shrapnel holes in the roof of our tents. But, because they are KBR trailers, we can't.
And we wanted to modify the towers. Build a pedestal or something so we could haul a .50 cal up there instead of a M240. But they are KBR towers, so we had to get their permission.
They don't control any missions or anything like that, but they do take a lot to support. We have to run convoys all day every day just for KBR and the PX.
Plus, I preffered getting served by Army cooks and having my maintence done by Army mechanics. The food might not have been quite as good, but I knew that on the off chance of an Iraqi Tet Offensive or something, I could count on those guys to be on the line with a rifle. And they can defend themselves in a convoy. I don't think Phlip messhall workers here would have done well in the Battle of The Bulge.
Plus plus, our cooks up north were more than cooks. Whenever there was a mass casualty incident, they served as stretcher bearers and traffic control for the aid station.
When the mercenaries come in to the mess hall I get up and leave. |
