The finale is fucking great. It's a perfect fun and crowd-pleasing way to end the game.
Taking control of a flag pole to spring back and fling yourself through a level is surprisingly fun, but there's only really one great but very short sequence that uses it. The rest of the time it's just a straightforward means to an end.
The timed races were highlights because they forced you to get creative about speeding through a level.
Overall, the level design just seemed kind of uninspired. I blame the fact that there's about 1,000 (literally one thousand) moons to collect. I'm up over 750. Most of them are on the order of "run to spot, smash block / butt stomp ground / run in slightly hidden nook, collect," rather than the reward for carefully navigating a meticulously designed obstacle course. The levels are less about challenging you with platforming and more about just giving you an arena to run around in and collect a bunch of shit. You have combo moves now that increase jump distance and height or allow you to change direction in mid-air, and they're fun but unfortunately rarely necessary. There's some good stuff in here and flashes of brilliance, but it feels like they focused on providing a time sink more than anything.
It'll be nice if they port 3D World, because it's far and away the better game. |
