So I'm up to New Donk City, which is world 5 or 6. It's good, but not great. Not quite seeing the reason for the 10/10s being thrown around. I'd say 8-8.5. It's a return to the Mario 64 style collectathon.

The cap is just the means for new power-up suits. They're alright. Some are good, like the tank, some are mediocre like the frog and t-rex.

Speaking of the frog and t-rex, what struck me is how clumsy they feel. Mario always had a feeling of laser-precise controls in difficult demanding obstacle courses. The t-rex is an oversized character in a Mario-sized arena that's too confining to move around in so you spend what little time you're transformed trying not to walk off a cliff instead of running and stomping around like a giant. The frog let's you jump like 10 times your normal jump height, but is so bad it feels like an afterthought. It's something I'd expect in another, crappier platformer. Then in the second world you can ride around the desert on statues that run at warp speed but are hard to steer so you don't feel like you have control over them, which I guess is what they're going for, but is frustrating in comparison to, say, Yoshi eating chili peppers in Galaxy 2 where you can also run at top speed and turn on a dime and they throw unforgiving courses at you. In Odyssey, you can ride the statues into a hidden course but rather than expecting you to bomb through it at normal speed without making mistakes, the solution is to hold down the button for brakes and take every turn as slow as possible. Press B for less fun :(

I was pleasantly surprised that some of the boss fights were pretty challenging.

Overall, I'm liking it, but I'm not prepared to gush over it.

It's fine, but massively overrated. 8 is about right, I'd even go as low as 7. by Rafiki 11/25/2017, 8:33pm PST NEW
I'm still liking it a lot, but I did get a bit exhausted mid-late game by mark 05/22/2018, 8:06pm PDT NEW
