Holy fuck I can't imagine how fast any serious photography program would boot you out for that shit. It's the equivalent of taking a 3D animation class and handing in some colored pencil doodles on torn out notebook paper for your final project. We're supposed to believe the main character got a full ride scholarship with this shit? She acts totally shocked that other students are constructing portfolios and sending their work off the galleries.


I can still appreciate the shots that are rooted in photojournalism or wildlife photography. But I've never been moved by Humans of New York or most of what I see in contemporary galleries and museums. I guess some older works like Diane Arbus are fine. It's not that photos don't look nice technically. but I've never been compelled to buy one as a print to hang on my wall or save the photo in my pictures folder. I think because so much of it is either 1. white person travels to another country and snaps the locals like freaks (which I can see in any FB or Instagram feed) or 2. some ham-handed message about suburbia or pollution or 3. an even more ham-handed Deviantart photo of something cutesy or a sad girl. Maybe it's due to saturation but I can still appreciate a good illustration or painting even though I'm surrounded by drawings everyday as well.
