Initializing usb drive? by fucking idiot 03/28/2015, 2:00am PDT I have an old external Smartdisk Firelite usb hard drive that I'm trying to access. It used to work on this computer until I had to reinstall Windows. It detects it, installs the drivers, says it's ready, shows up in Device Manager as working. It just doesn't show up in file manager. Disk Management says it's not initialized. Selecting Initialize Disk followed be either the MBR or GPT option does nothing. Google result tech forums are all worthless morons. What to do? Formatting the drive is not an option.
