I totally understand why you love Elite Dangerous, I just set fire to $35 buying "Approaching Infinity" because I thought it was going to be a randomly generated Starflight (It isn't. It's really, really terrible. How the hell does Shrapnel Games stay in business now that they no longer have a monopoly on the Dominions series?)
A real problem with the Elite clone genre is that it promises exploration... but really doesn't deliver. You're not exploring the unknown, there's a goddamn space station with compatible hookups for your ship already set up in every system. You're less Lewis and Clark in space and more like driving route 66 with no map. Everything from Elite to Space Rangers 2 shares that problem. Part of the reason I wish I loved Drox Operative more is that it's a game where you really are exploring the unknown, discovering planets the races have yet to colonize, and selling that knowledge for a premium. Too bad the graphics and music for that game are 50 shades of AIDS.
The other thing is that everyone loves Han Solo. Han Solo's job is a smuggler. However, other than the false floors on the Falcon, none of the cool stuff Solo does in the movie has anything to do with smuggling. Here come the elite clones, made by people who want to be Han Solo, and instead of recreating the asteroid chase from Empire, they create a detailed simulation of being a smuggler and the boring economy that job would take place in.
But most of all I don't like waiting anymore. |
