The thing about Protoss is the sheer number of options they have available to hit you with early to mid game. They can proxy the easiest. Their scout worker can start warping in a pylon inside your base and even if he doesn't commit something to it you're still forced to deal with it. They get the early ramp vision with a mothership core. They have multiple mid game tech paths they can hit you with, each having totally different counters. You have to worry about the possibility colossus, oracle rush, dark templar, or plain old gateway spam. Against terran the only question is "infantry or mech?" and with zerg it's "mutas or no?" Meanwhile a cheap 100/100 tier 1.5 mothership core successfully thwarts most early-mid game harassment you might otherwise catch them off guard with.
It reminds me of Broodwar where Terran was especially boned against early game Protoss because the counter to each Protoss choice was even more of a costly investment and those motherfucking cheap goddamn corsairs.
