It was actually kind of interesting.
I used to play starcraft 2 a bunch when it first came out and a bunch of my friends were playing. Every now and then, I still watch a few Starcraft 2 games on Youtube. The last time I did this was when I got the flu. I didn't want to move out of my chair, so I just called up some starcraft games on the TV.
Well, first of all, I think Blizzard has done a lot to balance things. SC2 is probably one of the most balanced real-time strategy games out there. Partly it's because the competition is so lame (medium tanks in total annihilation, anyone?) And partly it's because who other than Blizzard keeps working on an RTS for more than a year or two? Most RTS games are popular for a year or two, and then fade. In that case, the company doesn't have an incentive to keep balancing things once pro players figure out how to min-max.
If Toss really was overpowered, we wouldn't see so many pro players choose another race. And Blizzard would step in to nerf it.
BUT. My general sense of things is that Zerg / Terran / Protoss have different strenghts which may unbalance a given map or scenario. It's really almost impossible to win against a good ultra-late-game Zerg. Infestors with fungal growth is a really hard thing for either Terran or Protoss to counter. If you are Terran, you can bend over and kiss your ass goodbye once Infestors drop... unless you have the micro of a god, and you can tell each individual unit what path it should follow. Even then, the chances are not good. If late-game Zerg wants to seriously go air, Protoss does not have any cost-effective counter other than ground units.
Terran dominate the mid game, but don't get very much in the late game. The ideal terran just launches a ton of harassment in the midgame-- as many simultaneous attacks as possible-- and tries to win before the late-game arrives. If the lategame does arrive, and the enemy is Protoss or Zerg, the odds are not good for the Terran.
Protoss is probably the easiest race for a newbie to win with. But I wouldn't say they are OP... definitely not. Maybe this will change in the latest expansion, but they used to have the fewest effective harassment options. You're kind of limited to moving around your big clump of units, trying to put out fires started by the enemy. So really you want to force the enemy into a straight battle when you're protoss, which is kind of the way I imagine Blizzard wanted to balance it (Protoss are the "honorable" ones?) |
