warped the whole experience back to being interesting, in a drinking game kind of way.

I liked the subtle metaphor that it was Oblivious middle class yuppies who were ruining the planet by turning a blind eye to their energy-seeking Texan overlords.

They could have made the twist slightly less obvious by not dumping the "5 year memory wipe" line in the first two minutes. But it was in (superior recent sci-fi movie that I won't spoil by naming it here) so the Oblivion assembly machine had to include it.
