I have a game grid which is 10x10. Each square in the grid is in effect a button, so the user can click on it to change its state., Well, to check whether the user's game is trashed because they made a mistake, I simply want to reference the grid as a 10x10 array of buttons. Which you can do in VB; in Free Pascal/Delphi each button is a named variable, and to make it simpler to reference each element or to look at elements to the right, left, up or down it is much simpler and more intuitive to use an array.
