Science fiction has become gentrified and mainstreamed, try the shit Netflix makes that isn't even marketed for the Boomers watching television these days. Fuckers have no palate left, it couldn't stand up to fifty years of being couch potatoes. Television is a huge medium, huge media require mass-market goods, mass-market goods are shit filled with watery attempts at universal appeal; try the niche markets instead. BBC's Black Mirror comes to mind.
Oh, Sherlock is back for season 3 or something, maybe that counts as vaguely science fiction now. Everything is science fiction, considering the variety in what the Sci-Fi channel tries to run. Fantasy and historical fiction are both science fiction. Horror-thriller paranormal shit, too.
It's not like visual media where the words aren't important and the timeframe is limited was going to have better writing than...a medium in which writing was the only way forward. Better break down and read some Iain Banks. |
