| The volume of data is not really a problem any more. We have enough storage and processing power to do most of the things we'd want to do with it. That situation is only going to improve in the next few years, as well.
The issue is that we don't have nearly enough data scientists and profilers to "solve" crime in any meaningful sense. Data is meaningless without humans to make sense of it. The U.S. is also pretty bad at caring for people with mental illness, who commit a large fraction of crimes. It's pretty usual to see mentally ill people on the street around here because we closed most of the asylums in the 1970s. And then there's the ever-growing number of computer crimes, committed by people who have a pretty good idea of how to hide their tracks. |
