It's more interesting that this turns popular crime into performance art. by fucking ECHELON 07/09/2013, 4:08am PDT
You realize sorting through that data is potentially hazardous for the user, right? We're getting more reports of psychological casualties (crippling PTSD, etc) being a higher risk for predator drone pilots than front-line personnel, and the emerging technologies could turn someone using them for organizations like the NSA into a repeat witness to brutal wetwork or brutal crime no problem. Either we get to delegate this shit to increasingly more specialized/more trusted artificial systems for discriminating between what's relevant and what isn't, or we further abuse the already pretty horribly treated people working in these fields to find your dead celebrity.

I really don't think the improvements in public safety technology seen in the last half-century have made surly cops on the tail end of a career of institutionalized traumatization any friendlier, you know? Real whodunits are plenty dark even in the west, but imagine what happens when the Russians get their hands on this kind of shit and use it for more than just blackmailing oligarchs. For sure some guy in Putin's pretend-civvie urban special forces is beating the shit out of an 'informant' as you read this just 'cause that's the second world for you, he's not gonna get any nicer if you give him a bunch of camera feeds stuck up people's asses or their browser history.

Anyway, now we all get to live in a world where the government is up in yo' business, which is gonna be a fact of life from this point forward. Aside from the bone thrown to idiots all over the political spectrum, let's remember that it is also the same world in which one cannot keep secrets, thanks Wikileaks. The possibility of attitudes like yours being held by a wide group of people (never pegged you for popular crime, but whatever floats your boat) combined with the perceived impossibly of keeping secrets from authorities AND the public make for a fun mix - they may together give rise to invented, attention-whoring celebutante crime sprees, which is certainly a welcome joy. Let's all line up to watch someone turn the cast of Jersey Shore into one of the Saw movies. My body is ready for that. But the idea that we should be checking up on someone that reads about serial killers for fun is just gonna get you a lot of obsessives on your radar if ever put to the test.

At least when the News of the World was breaking into your goddamn phone and stealing your tweets, we Americans still lived in a world where the perception of power had not yet completely switched from that vestigial excuse for a legislature in DC to the lobbyists running its IVs and changing the catheter bag.
