Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit (2010) by Rafiki 11/13/2012, 10:03pm PST
I can't decide if the game's too easy or if I've just gotten too good at arcade racers. I played the illegal racing half exclusively until I completed all the events and got gold on the very first try on nearly every single one. The controls in the game are dead-on (PC with an XBox controller), which is why I can't decide who's fault it is for me getting gold so easily. The handling and the powersliding was pretty much worked exactly the way I expected from the first race. Is it possible to become so good at games that an entire genre no longer poses a challenge? My dad had this game and I remember playing it for the first time on his Xbox and he had a variety of uncompleted events and assortment of medals between bronze and gold, but I never follwed up with him to find out if the game was challenging and I'm too good or if he just sucks.

The only time when the game provided any real difficulty was when the AI started cheating. What was the last racing game that was challenging where the AI didn't resort to cheating? The original Super Mario Kart? Most of the cheating revolved around the AI getting impossible speed boosts, which usually involved cops dropping spike strips. No matter how fast you're driving, if a cop announces they're going to drop a spike strip they're going to go faster than you to get out in front. At one point I was over 210mph with nitrous and I decided to pop a turbo boost to go 90s1. But sure enough since a cop had radioed that he was going to drop a spike strip, he went flying by me at warp speed sending ripples through time allowing me to peer into the past to see dead relatives and that time Entropy Stew came out of the closet. Later in the game I was in a 1v1 match on the mountain course, and during the final half of the course, despite being only a few yards behind the AI all the way up to that point, the AI car suddenly started driving faster and faster and, despite no mistakes on my part for the rest of the race, the AI finished ahead of me by twelve and a half seconds. In the retry I won, no problem, but I still can't understand how the first match was such a ridiculous blowout.

In the early races I got the impression the AI would intentionally throw the race to make the game easier. I had a shitty race on one course and was expecting to lose, but right in the final stretch with the AI car way ahead and no nitrous or any way for me to catch up it was if the AI just took its foot of the gas and let me breeze by to take 1st so I wouldn't feel bad. I'm 8 years old racing my mom, apparently.

And despite the game playing up the cop chasing angle, that's maybe a quarter of the events. The rest are straight races against 7 other cars (fun), 1v1 duels (boring), and time trial. Remember when time trial was an entirely separate mode from the main game because it was universally agreed it sucked and nobody liked it? Every single time I unlocked a new event and found out it was another stupid "test drive," I let out a huge sigh and then grudgingly plowed my way through it so I could unlock other fun parts.

And 90% of the time you unlocked a car they wouldn't let you use the fucking thing. Every race had dumb restrictions allowing you to use only 2 or 3 cars, or you'd unlock a car in an entirely separate racing class you hadn't unlocked yet. Winning gold on every event meant I pretty much unlocked a new car after every single event, but rather than having a huge stable to choose from for the next event I'd just get a nice big list of, "This car is not available for this event." Nothing's more rewarding than not being able to play with your new toys.

If they're making another, hopefully they change nothing about the controls but focus more on cop chases and smashing into people and letting me use my cars whenever I want, and less on driving alone and only letting me look at my Hot Wheels from behind a glass case.
