Yeah, my anecdote might not have happened after Street Fighter III, it might've been after Street Fighter Alpha 2, or whatever. Probably right as SFA2 came to consoles, since that would explain the internet arguing, Saturn fans trumpeting their superior port (finally). But Capcom had said they were keeping SFIII in 2D long before it came out, so they were the last refuge of the polygon naysayers.

I don't think I've played a 3d fighter that matched that 2d crisp feel until SF4. The "blah blah keyframes" explanation sounds like bs, but there has to be a reason.
Great question. The short answer is that a crisp 2D feel wasn't the direction of fighting games prior to SFIV jump starting the scene again. For the last decade we thought we wanted plodding realistic brawlers in the Tekken/VF/SC style, so that's what we got. Turns out we still wanted to play SFII too. It's telling that you said "feel" and not "look". SFIV's cartoony nature extends into mechanics too -- like how each strike pauses the action for a split second which alone communicates so much weight to the contact before the rest of the animation finishes, and also has the side effects of being able to backload the animation frames after the quick execution, and also making it easier to "read" the action, instead of just a flurry of quick moves. The fight has a staccato rhythm. But that's not all! Ono also talked about originally using collision detection in the early SFIV builds, but people didn't like it at test locations because it didn't feel like Street Fighter. So hit boxes went (back) in and suddenly it was Street Fighter again, a huge hit was (re)born.
In the longer answer I would even talk about how today's 3D animators are exponentially better than the self-taught ones of previous fighting game generations, 60 frames per second versus the 30 in prior gens, your forgetful brain about some slick fighters out there, what is the nature of crispness, and various Wittgensteins. |
