Like most terrible modern movie trends, I place this blame squarely on Michael B by ay -fabio 06/02/2012, 2:18pm PDT

HERE'S A THING THAT HOLLYWOOD CANNOT SEEM TO DO ANYMORE: create a believable workplace. That's something I noticed while watching Alien as well: both films are set in totally imaginary places and yet the environment seems like it's lived-in and the characters seem like they know each other. Maybe it's all down to the cast? Moon is a notable modern exception.

(also Jerry Bruckheimer)

You can't have any kind of crises anymore without bad horror movie level childish infighting or, if the setting isn't isolated, someone immediately shouting GET ME THE PRESIDENT with overdone mood lighting and actors trying to outdo each other for intensity.

Watching Andromeda Strain and China Syndrome on netflix right now really drives home how things have changed. Contrast the crises in those movies and their believable responses with the likes of Armageddon. It reminds me of the Plinkett comparison of how a technically more boring scene of people walking down a hallway ends up being a more effective climax than all the pointless big budget action in the world thanks to better writing.
