- Start to overdone CGI: 2 minutes
- Start to character saying, "Let me get this straight.": 15 minutes
- Number of "Let me get this straight" exposition repetitions: 3
- Who would want to see a movie with a bunch of foreign dudes? Add in some Americans and chicks.
- Screeching violins to artificially add tension
- "Tense" scene punctuated by a character yelling "boo!"
- "Tense" scenes where the monster is about to get a character, only to disappear so it can wait for the character to breath a sigh of relief before loud music signals it to jump out again.
- "I guess it gets cold in Antarctica. Better have the characters wear hats half the time." -LA native
- Deciding to lock two suspected aliens in a shed, despite witnessing an alien effortlessly burst through a roof earlier.
There is a scene that goes like this almost word for word:
OUTPOST LEADER
We're getting out of here in the vehicles.
SCIENTIST CHICK
We can't split up. Do you want to be alone in a vehicle with it? Vulnerable? That's just what it wants.
DUDE
So what do we do?
SCIENTIST CHICK
Split up. You come with me to disable the vehicles.
Only 20% of the movie is about the paranoia of wondering who's an alien. The rest is a generic horror movie of people running away from CGI monsters, with the beginning and ending cribbed straight from Aliens vs Predator.
The whole point of the original was the audience not having the complete picture and the characters acting intelligently based on what they knew at the moment. Here they try to Gus Van Sant copy some scenes from the original, but there's no tension because it's just the characters playing catch up to what the audience already knows to scenes that have already happened . The characters not only learn about the shapeshifting early on, but also come up with a simple fool proof alien test. Every following crises is a result of their own stupidity.
