I (stupidly) neglected to switch the cable account under my name to my roommates' when I moved out (actually it was morel like I called 3 times to have them send the switchover form and it never came). Months later I find out that the account is $200 past due. I tell them to cancel the account and they inform me that they can't cancel it until the outstanding balance is paid.

I have a corporation. (Actually I have two and an LLC.) Here in Maryland it costs $120 to incorporate (or $100 to authorize an existing corporation from another state to do business here), and if you set it up right, no renewal fee. Virginia is $75 and $25 a year to renew. Colorado is $50 and $10 a year to renew. Different states have different rules.

I never order utilities in my own name, I always order them under the corporation's name. This means the corporation is responsible for the bill; I am not. I never make personal guarantees for the corporation so they can't sue me, they have to sue the corporation (which basically has little to no assets) and if they report the bill to credit agencies as not paid, they can only report it against the corporate entity, not me personally. I wish I had known this trick back when I first ordered Comcast, I wouldn't have been hit for charges when two of their cable boxes turned up missing when I moved.
