I had all the same problems as the Addict when playing it (far too much combat, no harmonic gems anywhere, scrolling through magic spells) plus critical hits didn't work at all and they're a big part of how the game's meant to be played. However all of these problems sound like they're PC-only. My friend who recommended the series had originally played on C64 and Amiga and says the 3rd was one of his favourites. You should have a better experience with it than I did.
