Hence why the correct answer to the debate (fuck you for legislating my body) isn't instantly crystal clear to everyone.
It's easy to say what abortion isn't: murdering a newborn in its crib. At that point it is no longer physically connected to the mother and can easily be put into the care of others if she is still unable or unwilling to care for it.
The closest you can get to making a medical comparison would be organ/blood donation. The fact that someone will die if you refuse to lend your body as life support does not make you a murderer for refusing to do so. Many claim it is because you must go in and remove a developing fetus which is exactly like Jack the Ripper! Except it isn't, and the closest medical procedure to that would be tearing out the needle from you arm in the middle of a blood transfusion, leading to the death of a recipient who would have otherwise lived had you done nothing. Still not murder. Having to dig into convoluted scenarios like that for the closest analogy to abortion is the ammunition anti-choicers use to discredit others.
As far as their motivation, it isn't so much a hatred of non-reproductive sex (though they certainly possess it) as it is a hatred of living for the self. Nothing infuriates reactionaries like behaviors and institutions that weaken a system of rigid patriarchal control and sources of unquestioning followers. It's why they hate women's rights. It's why they homeschool. It's why they loathe higher education so much as their spawn go off and get laid at college. Any man/woman relationship not raising babies is not only a wasted opportunity to expand their fiefdom, but a perceived danger to their authority as fulfilling relationships tend to shift a man and woman's loyalty to each other rather than god and country. Orwell outlined this with 1984's Anti-Sex League. To any authoritarian regime, the ideal is couples who can't stand each other but are forced to stay together through marriage as they continue to pump out babies.
Ironically, their true intent is exposed whenever they grudgingly condemn someone who shoots up a women's health clinic. By their logic, each of those doctors is Josef Mengele himself manning concentration camps for babies. Anyone who takes them out should be a hero, law or no law. The reason they get upset at such shootings isn't out of any respect for the doctors' lives, but for public seeing them called on their bluff. |
