Freespace 2, of course, with the SCP mod.
Age of Wonders 1 has its defenders, but I found it to be crap. AoW: Shadow Magic is the best, especially if you grab the 1.4 fanpatch, though some people are currently working on a new Multiplayer patch. Probably the prettiest 2D fantasy strategy game I've ever played.
Nox is an experimental action game that was unfortunately mislabeled a Diablo clone. I love it. Bear in mind you should be HAULING ASS through the levels in this game, even if you're playing a wizard. Don't even bother trying to grind.
If you never played Rayman 2, it's worth it. Ditto Beyond Good and Evil.
Outcast is a fantastic game, even though it runs in a tiny window. It's an open world game with characters as well-realized as an old Lucasarts graphic adventure game. Bear in mind that you will have to spend some quality time with the manual before starting to understand what all your strangely-named equipment can do. The into cinematic may lead you to believe you're operating under a time constraint, but have no fear, you aren't.
Sacrifice is the best game Shiny ever made and I think its crazy Dr Seuss visuals hold up today. Fuck Master Chief, Eldred is the coolest protagonist in video game history.
