So for the past month my optical USB mouse would shut off every once in a while and I'd have to unplug and plug it back in to get it working again. I just chalked it up to a dying mouse (8 years old) and planned on replacing it.
But now I'm starting to think it's my USB ports in general. The problem with the USB wifi adapter now is that it's constantly disabling and enabling itself every couple of seconds, appearing in the notification area for a couple of seconds trying to connect to the router then disappearing as it disables itself and so on and so on every five seconds or so. The adapter light stays on the whole time so it's not like it totally loses connection. It's just for some reason Windows (XP) keeps rapidly cycling through disabling and enabling it.
The only thing I've been able to find on Google are a lot of indefinite talk on power supply (already turned off the power saving option for the USB root hub under universal serial bus controllers, no good) and people not getting any USB devices to work with XP sp3 (I've never had any such problems with sp3).
I'm currently pulling Joe Yance intimidation body language techniques to keep my roommates shut up about the 50 ft ethernet cable winding downstairs, but even mighty joe can't last forever. What the hell is going on? |
