Boy, do I feel like an idiot. by Jerry Whorebach 09/01/2011, 3:44pm PDT
I figured out why I wasn't enjoying Forza 3, and it wasn't because of the almost unimaginably dull and grindy career mode, the pointless restriction of leaderboards to time trials only, or the insulting refusal to even acknowledge driving skill, let alone demand it. It was because the fucking game was playing itself the whole time! I naively assumed that by switching off all the driving aids on the difficulty select screen, I'd be getting the full experience, and any unresponsiveness in the controls was due to the new, supposedly vastly more "realistic" physics. How wrong I was.

Apparently, Forza 3 uses some sort of advanced predictive steering to "smooth out" input from your controller's analog stick. What this translates to, in practice, is a limit placed on the range of motion of your virtual steering wheel that is entirely dependent on the speed your virtual car is travelling. Presumably, this prevents mongoloid players from locking out their wheel when they just mean to turn it a little bit, but it also prevents anyone who's played one of these things before from turning the wheel hard enough at speed to lose traction - a necessity for executing such critical maneuvers as a simple Scandinavian flick. So while Forza 2 required you to balance your analog inputs on a knife's edge, constantly holding the line between understeering and oversteering, until such time as it became advantageous to break the tension, launching your car into a dramatic controlled slide...

Sorry, I must have let my mind wander into the D-Dimension. Anyway, while Forza 2 required all that, Forza 3 merely requires you to jam the stick to one side or the other, and occasionally mash on the brakes until it decides you're going slow enough to be handed back just enough control to crawl around the corner in spectacularly unspectacular fashion. Forza 3 takes hand-holding to a whole new level. It doesn't just pick you up and carry you across the finish line, it breaks your fucking feet first, like the fat bird in that James Caan movie.
