You brought up the left, not I. I answered accordingly, with reference to the particular traits of the modern left, in this case serving as many of the international pressures on the country. I would think the Niger(ian?) govt is simply responding in a very visceral fashion to the many mutated versions of political correctness that pollute the world, mostly on the left but occasionally, vocally on the right.

I don't know if such a thing exists. Certainly Marx, Lenin, Mao, etc were firm believers in enlightened cliques of leaders (AKA MASTERS FOR THE SLOW ONES IN THE AUDIENCE), and I'd say their commie credentials are pretty solid irrespective of their particular subspecies of it. With masters come slaves, no? Or serfs. Or proletariat, or with whatever euphemism you are most comfortable.

Aren't slaves something that should be available in a rightist totally open free market economy?

I honestly don't know for sure. I think at the extremes of any political theory you end up with radical imbalances in power and wealth that could credibly be described as slavery. Given that none of those have existed, I guess we'd have to look at the two closest examples that come to mind, which would be Taiwan until very recently, Chile prior to the 90's, and Singapore. I don't think in any of those cases can we directly equate the lack of political liberty with the amount of individual liberty except in very specific cases, which compare quite favourably with their communist opposites.
Also, Hong Kong was a pretty good example, I think, and that seemed to work.

I think they can take interesting swings in either direction, but fundamentally you are correct. However, I was speaking more of what I think Joosh was referencing, which would be the international forces driving such farcical behaviour.

I suspect most of the social and economic policies are "DEAR SWEET FUCK, PRAY FOR A MIRACLE".

Bad government is often intentionally bad. Perhaps Niger has finally figured out what has eluded so many shithead govt's in the past: that growth and prosperity are ultimately the undoing of dictatorships/oligarchies.

I hear the "women are on the forefront of social trends" thread calling your name.

I guess that joke is too far inside for me. :(
