And Achievements being some huge evolutionary step above scoring? What do you have to do to get achievements besides grind? Get a certain score? Achievements are just your high scores viewed through a very blurry lens.]
Achievements are almost never about score. They are usually given out for either progressing through the story, doing a tricky thing, or doing a normal thing well.
The main benefit of an achievement over a top score is that Achievements indicate when a player is above a certain skill threshold while a top score can only be judged against the top player in the world. Beating a stage and getting a gold star feels good! It means "Congratulations, you did a good job there." Beating a level but seeing that you are still only ranked #84,900 in the world by score feels shitty. It means "Who cares, what you just did is shit compared to everyone else." Hell, even getting ranked #13 in the world is still shit.
Another advantage of achievements over top score is that achievements can indicate that a player has accomplished something unusual or difficult. If the only metric is score then there's little way of showing that you once took out a boss with only proximity mines, or that you once kicked a field goal that hit the crossbar. I'm maybe the two millionth best player in TF2 but one time I got a headshot on a cloaked spy and I can prove it. Again, that kind of thing feels good. In addition, if you want to give out achievements for high scores then feel free. If you want to record unusual tricks with a top score then I hope you like doing arithmetic.
Thirdly, achievements can carry over from one attempt to the next. While you are practicing/playing a game you can see that not only are you getting better at playing but also even your failed attempts still count for something. In L4D, no matter if I fuck up terribly, I'm still making some progress towards the 'kill 53,595 zombies' achievement. That feels good. With top scores, if you get a billion points one time and 999,999,999 the next, that second attempt is worth a pitcher of spit (only useful for pushing your brother's entries off the top ten list).
In conclusion, if you are suggesting that top scores alone are more rewarding than achievements then you are wrong, and "correcting" me by pointing out the NES doesn't take quarters is something a ridiculous cunt would do. |
