I enjoyed Firefly and Dollhouse; Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda, not so much. by Jerry Whorebach 07/31/2010, 10:22pm PDT I thought Fallout was pretty good. More recently, Dead Rising kept the basic elements of a CRPG (linear main questline, optional sidequests, random encounters, experience points, hit points, feats, equipment, so on and so forth) while stripping away the drudgery and replacing it with gameplay that was actually fun and even challenging at times. BioShock didn't have the greatest first-person shooting in the world, but it was at least competent, and it had a great fucking story (about an eccentric industrialist who abandoned the surface world to start a new life under the sea) and some really nice art. And I guess if you want to argue that Mass Effect is more deserving of the title "RPG" than something like Privateer or X-Com or Jagged Alliance 2 or Beyond & Evil or Resident Evil 4, you can go ahead and do that, but it doesn't change the fact that they're all fun as hell to play. Mass Effect is a shallow and repetitive third-person shooter with hours of tedious fake-interactive cutscenes. It is essentially worthless.
