For me it succeeded. The end is so fantastic it makes you want to play it again on hard though the game sort of falls apart on hard.
A number of enemy bosses and would-be cool fights have framerate issues, or general issues with execution. The sprint ability is activated with double tapping dodge, so if you're dodging like an idiot you'll suddenly turn into a panther and it just feels poorly designed. There are jumps where you "Press A to Jump" but that's actually your jump button. So you press it and you'll fucking fly off the edge if the prompt happened to disappear for a second. Other times you'll come out of a cutscene to fall to your death.
Dodging is basically the only way you beat things, you can't avoid most attacks without using the witch time dodge, and it gives you a huge advantage and fast way to kill enemies. The main issue is that when you hold a direction and double tap dodge you sprint, so you tend to judge dodge with the analog stick neutral which sort of looks gay and is unfun.
There's a laundry list of this kind of shit which will kill you, for example there is a "yes/no" prompt on every cutscene skip, and a menu for resume cutscene/skip. :(
Maybe my issue is ignoring the items and skills. Though I was too tempted by the new weapons, which really just let you have bazookas on your arms and feet at the same, sure that sounds awesome, but you would rather have the sword, because the sword is the best weapon in the game. |

The game really tries hard to make it up to you in the end. by Worm 01/09/2010, 11:39am PST
